I have used VDC plug-in products for over 12 years and have been very happy. For my current requirement, I needed a solar charging system. I have a towable backhoe machine that uses a 12 volt 18AH gell-cell lead acid battery. The machine charges the battery when in use, but the unit can sit for days/weeks/months unused and I wanted to keep the battery maintained. It is stored away from buildings so I cannot use the normal AC-plugin charger product. I purchased a VDC Electronics BatteryMINDer® Model SCC1224 12V/24V Controller w/2O Watt Panel Solar Battery Charger-Maintainer-Desulfator which combines a solar panel with their charger/desulfator unit. The panel is relatively small and is made of a very thin but robust plastic backing format approximately 1.5 feet square. It came with a long 2-wire red/black cable which can be terminated as needed; I opted to solder on a couple automotive butt connectors which are insulated on the outside to prevent shorts. The unit comes with their additional indicator that shows charge status of the battery (poor/medium/strong) at the press of a button. The charger/maintainer/desulfator has LEDs that indicate error / charging / desulfating status. It comes with Velcro patches on both the charger unit and the battery health indicator which allows you to attach the electronic modules to your equipment. The unit has automatic temperature compensation via an external sensor. Even in early morning sun when it is still shady, the panel generates enough to keep the battery maintained. I had it out on a hot California day in 105 degree weather; the panel itself probably got up to 150 degrees with the black solar cell surfaces exposed to the sun but the heat had no effect on operation. I'm very pleased with the product.
